Wanda Media’s comedy Goodbye Mr. Loser has brought in more than RMB1.2 billion of box office revenue as of October 18, and the figure is still going up. The film has pulled in more ticket revenue than any other movie produced by Wanda Media in its history, and it overtook Pancake Man and Breakup Buddies to be among the five highest-grossing Chinese films.
The impressive performance came shortly after Pancake Man, also produced by Wanda Media, swept across the theaters with RMB1.159 billion in the summer. Goodbye Mr. Loser features no big-name director or actors, but its premium quality and strong word-of-mouth publicity have fueled its performance. The film earned more than RMB100 million when it hit the theatre on October 4 and the next day, and gross box office topped RMB1.2 billion on October 19th. It’s now on track to overtake Lost in Thailand and Journey to the West: Conquering the Demons as the third highest-grossing Chinese movie in history.
The huge success of Goodbye Mr. Loser has demonstrated again the importance of substance and quality to a film. A good story is always the No.1 determining factor of a film’s box office revenue. This film sets a new box-office record for Wanda Media and is the second RMB1 billion film it presented this year.
Later this year Wanda Movie will bring two blockbuster films - The Ghouls and Detective Chinatown - to cap a year of great success for the movie producer.
